Application Request Routing IIS Install  
This installation procedure is specific to Microsoft Application Request Routing ARR Version 2 for IIS 7. The installation is specific to the base app and its dependent modules.

ARR Version 2 installer package components:

  • Microsoft Application Request Routing Version 2 for IIS 7.
  • Microsoft URL Rewrite Module Version 2 for IIS 7 RC2.
  • Microsoft Web Farm Management Version 1 for IIS 7.
  • Microsoft External Cache Version 1 for IIS 7.
Install Prerequisites

IIS 7.0 on Windows 2008 (SKU of any version) or newer. This is the target install location for the Application Request Routing

Like other installation basics, it is required to uninstall or remove completely any version which has been previously installed.

Download Microsoft Application Request Routing release:

Microsoft Application Request Routing Version 2 for IIS 7 (x86)
Microsoft Application Request Routing Version 2 for IIS 7 (x64)

Microsoft Application Request Routing Version 2 Install Procedure

1. Open command prompt with administrator privileged.
2. Stop the WAS and WMSVC processes by using these strings:

net stop was /y
net stop wmsvc /y

This kill process is essential since ARR installs Hotfix KB 954438.

3. Execute ARRv2_setup_.exe:

For X86 Platforms: ARRv2_ setup_x86.exe
For x64 Platforms: ARRv2_setup_ x64.exe

4. Read and accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).
5. Installers specific to four components are automatically launched sequentially.
6. Complete the installation.
7. In checking the installation status navigate through to this reference point %TEMP%\arr_setup.log file. In the event that all the four packages have been installed successfully then it prompts as:

Completed the Microsoft Application Request Routing for IIS7 Setup. Installation results - Look in the respective msi log files (msiname.log) for more details.

rewrite.msi Success
webfarm.msi Success
requestrouter.msi Success
externaldiskcache.msi Success

8. In the event that the installation was not successful or a package has not been installed properly, troubleshooting calls for a downloaded executable which can be unpackaged. Execute the executable file with /T: and /C options. This specific command executes an unpackage process only specific to the four MSIs. Also, these can be manually executed one after the other. In the event that these MSIs were opted to be installed manually, it stacks in this order:

rewrite.msi
webfarm.msi
requestrouter.msi
externaldiskcache.msi

To a point the user/developer requires help and documentation on these MSI’s and Executables, execute the executable file with the /? option.

9. Initialize the WAS and WMSVC processes by using these strings:

net start was
net start wmsvc

Altering application pool process model specific to Application Request Routing

This procedural point is not required and can be optioned not to be executed. Skip to the next if not needed. The purpose is to disable the Idle Time-Out that is housed within the application pool process model that is specific to the Default Web Site.

Altering the application pool process model through UI utilization:

1. Launch IIS Manager.
2. Select Application Pools
3. DefaultAppPool targets the Default Web Site, then set by default. Choose DefaultAppPool. Under the Actions pane, and also under the Edit Application Pool, click Advanced Settings
4. Alter the Idle Time-out (minutes) value to 0 to disable the setting. Click on OK to save the changes.

Repair Procedure

Repairing Application Request Routing requires the execution of the downloaded package again, but this time it should be directed to Repair than than a fresh install.

Remove Procedure

For the removal of the Application Request Routing completely, the four packages should be manually removed.

1. Go to Control Panel.
2. Select Program and Features.
3. Navigate to the four components and uninstall one by one in this order:
1. Microsoft Application Request Routing Version 2 for IIS 7
2. Microsoft External Cache Version 1 for IIS 7
3. Microsoft URL Rewrite Module Version 2 for IIS 7 RC2 Microsoft Web Farm Framework Version 1 for IIS 7
